Following successful launches at both St Fagans and the National Library of Wales, the highly-acclaimed two-volume Welsh Furniture 1250 - 1950 by Richard Bebb was launched in London at the Olympia Antique Fair held recently.
As the acknowledged expert Richard Bebb brings together 16 years' original research, tracing the development of furniture in Wales from the medieval period into the 20th century. The accepted view among English scholars is that pieces found in Wales are derivative and degenerate copies of London-made or continental examples and referred to as retarded peasant furniture'.
Richard, who was born in the Rhondda and now lives in Kidwelly, demonstrates that the tridarns, coffers and dressers, so familiar to us as Welsh pieces, were part of a vital and independent tradition.
Taking a chronological approach, examples from all regions are explored, including important pieces and vibrant traditions from Pembrokeshire. Richard brings to life the medieval jousts and tournaments that brought together Welsh bards and carpenters to proclaim through heraldry, song and legend, the lineage of their noble patrons. Among the lavishly-illustrated pages you will find the fascinating tale of the chair of Rhys ap Thomas, which was made for one such tournament held at Carew 500 years ago in 1507. The closely researched provenance of the marriage cupboards of the Scourfields of Mote give a detailed case study of some of the most important early pieces in the British Isles. Other pieces of illustrious Pembrokeshire history, such as the carved chair and chest on stand on display at Scolton Manor, are illustrated and discussed, and the regional forms of dressers and inlaid coffers typical of Pembrokeshire are given detailed explanation with beautiful pictures.
