When we're updating our look for the new
season, nails are often glossed over. But
taking on new trends with your talons is
one of the hottest ways to make a statement and
update your style.
Forget the traditional French manicure, inject
some colour into your ensemble quick-smart with
this season's most stylish nail shades.
Carolyn Sears, director of Zoya, says: "In terms
of colour, the catwalk is split into two camps. There is a strong biker utilitarian look with dark blues, grey and lots of black leather and PVC.
"But also, suprisingly, bold block colours -
purple, orange, hot pink and lime green -
continue to fill the catwalk which is most unusual
for the autumn/winter season, but great for nails!"
Get busy with that nail brush and parade this
season's hottest hues.
INDIGO IDIOM
Just as the catwalks were awash with purple,
the trend for nails is very much about indulging in indigo. Purple, navy and blues are big news on
the nail front right now. These colours may be
dabbling with the dark side, but they're far more
flattering than harsh gothic black.

"With any dark colours, always use a great
basecoat to avoid staining the nail and a luxurious topcoat to avoid chipping," Carolyn advises.
METALLIC MANIA
Metallic yes, glitter no! Sparkle just isn't going to cut the style mustard if you're over 16 years of age. But just like the catwalk craze, metallic should be a glamour puss staple for winter.
"In terms of textures, metallics are very strong
which is great for the party season," Carolyn says.
Look out for dreamy bronzes, shimmering
silvers and glistening pale golds for an ultraluxurious look on your nails.
GREY MATTER
If there's one nail colour that's got everyone in a flap this season, it's gun metal-grey in a supermatt shade. From Nicole Farhi to Chloe, catwalks went wild for grey talons. Superdrug's head of cosmetics Simon Comins says: "This shade looks best when used on short nails with a high gloss top coat."
SCARLET WOMAN
The sexy 40s siren look was huge
on the catwalks, as seen on the
models at Valentino and D&G.
Classic pillar box red is hot on
lips and nails this season if
you're craving some classic
ladylike glamour.
If you don't want to be
on red alert, look for
muted deeper shades of
red or luscious plum.
STYLISH SHAPES
Want ultra on-trend
talons this season? You've
got to get the basic shape
right to work the trends to the
max. So what's the insider
know-how on achieving nails
with the wow factor?
"Squoval is probably the most
practical shape for wearing dark
colours," Carolyn advises. "But if you
want edgy then the newest shape
is the stiletto which is a more
rounded shape."
According to
Glossonline.co.uk, short and
squoval (squarish with
rounded edges) is the
shape to make with your
nail file. Even fake
talon aficionados
such as Victoria
Beckham are
ditching their extensions
in favour of short,
dark nails that
make a cuttingedge
statement.
Put less attention
on long lengths and
focus on perfecting
your fashion-friendly
new lacquer.
